Titanium Dioxide
Titanium Dioxide is what gives paint body and coverage. We use the highest levels of titanium dioxide in our paints giving you exceptional coverage. While cheaper grades can pollute waterways in China, we use the most premium grade, ethically-sourced and manufactured.
Calcium Carbonate
This is a naturally occurring chalk powder, often sourced from limestone. We use this wonderful natural resource as an extender, giving our paint body and creating a thick even paint film.
Manuka Oil
Sourced from an organic farm in Central North Island, NZ our Manuka oil acts as a natural bacterial and mould inhibitor, meaning we can leave out the nasties. It also gives our paint some of its lovely subtle essential oil aroma.
Diatomaceous Earth
This is the naturally-occurring fossilized remains of single-celled aquatic algae. This acts as a multi-functional mineral that improves paint performance, meaning we don't have to use additives. Diatomaceous earth is sustainable, constantly regenerating, and contributes to removing as much carbon dioxide as all the rainforests in the world combined.
Quartz Powder
Quartz powders are very essential minerals used in our paints. They are used to improve the appearance and durability, provide resistance to dirt, mildew, cracking and weathering contributing to brightness, reflectance, colour consistency, and oil absorption.
Castor Oil
The castor plant known as the miracle tree, Dehydrated castor oil is a natural binding agent. It imparts fine gloss, toughness, adhesion, flexibility and gives chemical and water resistance. Castor Oil is now one of the most important industrial oils on the earth.
Water
One of the world's most precious and self renewing resources, water makes up a large component of our paint formulas. Water is a safe, non-toxic solvent alternative, used to carry all of the other ingredients, as well as controlling the flow and application properties of the paint.
This is what we don't include that some others do
We are dedicated to producing natural-based coatings that don't include any nasty ingredients. These are some common internationally used coating ingredients that we steer well clear of.
Texanol
Texanol (2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate)
A drier found in almost all water-based paints in New Zealand and around the world. Texanol is classified in some countries as having reproductive toxicity and is suspected of causing damage to unborn children. It also contributes to the chemical fumes of paints causing many people to get headaches and nausea.
Volatile Organic Compounds
Volatile Organic Compounds are well known to be a significant contributor to harmful toxins being released during and after painting. Unfortunately in NZ, most Low VOC paints only measure VOCs that are negatively affecting outdoor air pollution, meaning they can still include VOCs and other harmful chemicals which are toxic to indoor air quality. Our paints and oils are all Low VOC or VOC free.
Phthalates
Phthalates are a family of industrial chemicals and are classified as Endocrine disruptors. They are commonly used in paints and cosmetics, and are suspected of causing damage to the liver, kidneys, lungs, and reproductive system.
Polyurethane / Isocyanates
Polyurethane is a petrochemical resin that contains isocyanates and is a known respiratory toxin. Uncured polyurethane can cause breathing problems such as asthma. People who are in rooms that have uncured polyurethane floors can also experience health problems including eye and throat irritation, headaches, nausea, vomiting, coughing and shortness of breath.
Mineral Turps, Toluene, Xylene
Nasty solvents that cause sore throat, dizziness, and headaches, as well as difficulty in breathing; impaired function of the lungs; impaired memory; stomach discomfort, suspected of causing cancer and having reproductive toxicity.
